"The Escape Room" Review: High-Stakes Thrills That Will Make You Forget Your Stress

I didn't watch "The Escape Room" because of any grand expectations. After a grueling job interview, I was simply looking for a way to blow off some steam and noticed the sequel had been released. While I had a vague idea of what it was about, I had never bothered to watch it until now. To my surprise, it was much more engaging than I anticipated. Though it doesn't boast a deep, complex plot, its relentless tension and mystery-driven atmosphere kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

The plot is elegantly simple: six strangers are invited to participate in a mysterious escape room competition with a massive cash prize. However, they quickly realize that the rooms are lethal, and they must use their wits to survive. That’s essentially it. In this genre, the "why" often matters less than the "how," and the film excels by focusing on constant, high-stakes urgency rather than over-explaining the narrative.

The real star of the film is the puzzle design. There are five different rooms, each with a unique and creative theme. The first three rooms were particularly fascinating to watch as the characters puzzled their way out. The final two rooms moved at a breakneck pace to tie up the mystery, making it a bit harder to appreciate the room designs themselves, but the momentum never wavered. While there weren't earth-shattering plot twists, the order in which characters met their fate definitely subverted my expectations.

As I watched, I couldn't help but draw parallels to the global phenomenon "Squid Game." The premise of survival games created for the entertainment of the wealthy, participants with secret pasts, and a shadowy organization pulling the strings—all these elements felt strikingly similar. While death-game movies often share tropes, "The Escape Room" and "Squid Game" seem to share a specific DNA in their structure and the way they tease future installments.

The first film concludes with a clear setup for a sequel, which is already available on Netflix. Given how much I enjoyed the inventive traps in the first one, I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of twisted games they’ve cooked up for Part 2.
