"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" Review: A 90s Kid’s Emotional Journey Back to the Mushroom Kingdom

The iconic Nintendo game we all grew up with, Super Mario Bros., has finally made its grand debut on the silver screen. Even just watching the trailer felt like stepping into a time machine back to my childhood. While I wouldn't call myself a "die-hard" Mario fan, the nostalgia was too strong to resist, so I finally caught it on Netflix.

The plot follows Mario and Luigi, two plumbers from Brooklyn who get sucked into a mysterious pipe and transported to a magical new world. Luigi ends up in the eerie Dark World, while Mario lands in the vibrant Mushroom Kingdom. The story follows Mario's quest to team up with Princess Peach and rescue his brother from the clutches of Bowser. Interestingly, the film flips the classic "save the princess" trope, making Luigi the one in need of rescuing—a refreshing change for long-time fans.

To be fair, this isn't a film with deep, complex themes like Inside Out or WALL-E. It doesn't harbor a profound hidden message. Yet, it was undeniably fun. As a member of the "Nintendo DS generation," seeing these characters brought to life was an emotional experience. Even though I was just a casual player back in the day, seeing the world I spent hours exploring as a kid triggered an incredible wave of nostalgia. That’s the power of childhood content—it connects directly to your past.

The movie is packed with "Easter eggs" from the games. From the power-up mushrooms and fire flowers of New Super Mario Bros. to scenes reminiscent of Mario 64 and Luigi’s Mansion, it was a visual feast for fans. The absolute highlight for me was the Mario Kart segment. Seeing Donkey Kong and the iconic "Rainbow Road" in all its cinematic glory made me want to pick up a controller immediately.

For a moment, I forgot the stresses of my adult life and returned to that innocent state of mind from my youth. It was a tiring day for me, but this movie felt like a warm, healing hug. If you were born in the 90s or have ever held a Nintendo controller, this movie is a valuable journey back to your childhood.
